Hot Wheels Birthday Party
My oldest son just turned 5 and we threw him a big hot wheels birthday party! Because I love big parties- but also want to stay on budget, I always DIY everything! It was so fun coming up with decorations and ideas for this party and I love the way it turned out!
Designing the photo backdrop is always one of my favorite parts of decorating for a party because it makes such a big impact! I love using these gold arches because they are so easy to use! They make so many different kinds of covers for them so you can easily customize them for your party. I I already had the white covers so this time I just bought the checkered print for the center. I also love making fringe banners because they are such a cheap way to add color to a party! I make them out of plastic tablecloths from the dollar tree and curling ribbon. Each color block was one tablecloth. Balloon arches are another really easy way to add color to a backdrop.
We made the hot wheels name same and the car cutouts out of foam board and attached them to the backdrop with fishing line. I also used a gold shelf I had at home as a place to display the party favors.
The party favors were so fun and honestly super easy to make. I used the party invitation but changed the words on it to say thank you for coming. Then I cut it out into the shape of an individual hot wheels package. I bought individual hot wheels packages and removed the plastic from the front of them using acetone nail polish remover. Then I glued the plastic to the new card I made with the car inside! It was pretty time consuming but not hard at all!
I love setting up little kids tables at my parties because it’s so fun for kids to all sit together for food, cake and crafts! We use 2 black storage tubs as “legs” for the table and put a piece of wood over the top for the tabletop! A normal sized tablecloth goes over the top and pillows go all around it for the kids to sit on! I bought the pillows in bulk on amazon and will buy new pillowcases for new party themes. Thankfully my kids consistently pick the same colors so I can reuse a lot.
I like to give every kid a seat at the table so I put out a plate with a cup that is labeled with their name on it. I use glue dots on the bottom of every plate that way they don’t blow away in the wind.
I decorated the cake table with another fringe banner I made and put a balloon arch over the top. I was going to add my colorful balloons to it but I ran out of time.
The cake turned out so cute! My husbands aunt always makes cakes and cupcakes for my kids parties. For the cupcakes I bought the liners and toppers off of amazon and they were perfect!
I bought this little pop up tent car on amazon and it was honestly the highlight of the party. There were 4 or 5 kids squished into it at once! It did get totally trashed so if you plan to buy one for your party be prepared that it wont survive the party.
My husband and Mother-in-law built this car track for the kids to have car races on. We used an old door from our house we were getting rid of as the base but you could also use a sheet of plywood. We used quarter round molding to nail down strips of wood to create separate lanes. When the kids had finished eating I let them each pick a hot wheel out of a box to use for races. They took them home with them as well as the ones I had packaged up as their party favors.
We also had a bounce house at the party because with 30 4 and 5 year olds running around they needed a way to get their energy out!
Overall it was such a great party and we had so much fun! These parties are always a lot of work but they are so much fun! I hope that when my kids look back on these they have so many fun memories and it contributes to a magical childhood! I’ll add some more pictures below but feel free to comment with any questions or head to my IG and send me a DM! Hope this gives you some inspiration for your own hot wheels party!
